Whilst they've not fully reverted back to black, someone with some sense has reinstated some darker shade of varnish on the wood panelling in the front bar and a fair chunk of the old atmosphere is revived as a result. There’s a quieter lounge-like room to the rear with some nice stained glass and a further one upstairs with a Georgian vibe to the décor – all done to a high standard. Consistently GBG listed over the last few years, I found six cask with 2x GK and guests with a decent range across styles. My Bristol Beer Factory Ride on Time was par (NBSS 3). I enjoyed myself and would make sure to have this one on the list next time in this part of the city. It was the local CAMRA branch Pub of the Year in 2022.

Used to be a very pleasant old school boozer, nice and dark, lots of nooks and crannies with old fellas supping pints and giving you the latest on their old hounds hip operation at the vets. Have very fond memories of watching the World Cup matches in here in '98 before going over to the Thekla. Went back in here for the first time in a few years last week and now it's all lit up, the nooks and crannies seem to have been reduced to a minimum…at least the two rooms remain as well as the wood boarding. Ale has taken a turn for the better (even if it is Greene King). There’s always a pub you know that “isn’t as good as it used to be” after a makeover and for me it’s this one. Rated 6

A mid terrace building of substantial construction with impressive if worn steps up to the front door past a small front terrace.Don't worry about the Greene King signage, this isn't one of their corporate disaster zones but rather a very good ale house. The tap room is L shaped with very fine wood panelling all around, and traditional furniture.Through an arch is a comfy back snug with it's own bar access while up a steep staircase is a first floor dining room.On the ground floor there are no food menus,it's a fine place just to sup. There were 4 guest on my visit besides the obligatory GK IPA,namely Twisted WTF,Yeovil Stout Hearted,Summerskill Whistle Belly Vengance and a good Goffs Jester Brew 9,NBSS 3.5.
One to include on any real ale tour of the city centre, possibly worth lingering for a while as it's just off the tourist radar.
