A Victorian back street pub with reputation for trouble, this was once featured on tv as one of Britain's hardest pubs. It is named after the 17th Century pythoness and, perhaps more aptly for this part of Portsmouth, prostitute. The single room pub was a bit battered in places, shoddy furniture and decor paying witness to its occasional lively night, but there was no hint of trouble during our visit. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, while the locals were chatty and convivial, at least most were - there were a couple who were, like the eponymous lady, just plain mad. One ale on, Pride, not brilliantly kept but quite drinkable. Probably best left to the locals, but only because there is better beer to be had nearby.

I didn't even get into this pub. As I was walking up to the door the police arrived to split up a big fight that was going on inside. (on a Monday night) Not worth the hassle of going in there.

Abandon hope, all ye who enter here. Mother Shipton lived some 500 years ago and foretold the future with uncannily accurate prophecies. Bet she never saw this particular hostelry in her worst nightmares though. Often one of Pompey's 'Wooden Window'
